The morning sun spills across the rolling hills of Mono, catching the sparkle of fresh snow as a cluster of first-timers shuffle into place at the base of the Teddy Bear hill.
Bright jackets flash against the white, poles are clutched a little too tightly and rental skis are splayed in tentative Vs. An instructor kneels to adjust a child’s boot buckle, offering calm encouragement as parents look on with equal parts pride and anticipation.
Nearby, the “magic carpet” hums steadily, carrying nervous but eager learners toward their first gentle descent. It’s here, at Hockley Valley Resort, that wobbly first steps transform into confident glides and the joy of skiing begins.
Neal Claassen, Hockley’s director of sport and recreation, says the resort is ideal for newcomers because of its intimate setting.
“The terrain is excellent for all skill levels but Hockley has many small hills that aren’t intimidating for first-timers,” he explains.
Tucked into the rolling hills of Mono, just a 45-minute drive north of the Greater Toronto Area, Hockley Valley Resort is a four-season gem that, come winter, becomes a gateway into the world of skiing and snowboarding.
For beginners, Hockley offers a mix of features, programs, and ambiance that removes many hurtles to help turn trepidation into triumph.
The “magic carpet” conveyor lift is one example. The lift is essentially a moving carpet rather than a rope tow or chair so those in the beginner learning area can get uphill more easily.
Hockley also has well-maintained trails and reliable snowmaking, which is key for new skiers and snowboarders. Neal's biggest tip for first-timers: “Get a lesson. This isn’t the easiest sport to figure out on your own. Lessons are the best investment.”
Hockley’s beginner packages make that investment simple, bundling lift tickets, lessons and equipment rental into one seamless experience.
The ski resort has a variety of instruction formats with both private and semi-private or group lesson options, so beginners can choose what works best for them. Private lessons offer one-on-one attention whereas group lessons bring social support and shared learning.
Instructors also understand the nervousness of first-timers and can help encourage good safety practices such as mandatory helmets and emphasize dressing properly for winter conditions.
“To have a good time, you need to be properly dressed,” Neal explains. “You need adequate gloves that can get wet, layers of clothing. It can get cold and windy at the top of the hill.”
For those taking their first runs, renting equipment is also recommended. Rental staff not only fit boots and skis but can also offer guidance to ensure a comfortable and safe experience.
“We live in Canada. We have four months of winter. If you want to enjoy it, you have to get outside.”
“Whether it’s talking to rental staff, instructors, or lift operators, all our staff contribute to an environment that’s safe and fun. Mistakes aren’t embarrassing — they are part of the learning curve,” Neal says.
Bringing a friend or family member along enhances the experience.
“Skiing is a very social sport,” he explained. “It’s one of the only sports where grandparents can take part side-by-side with their grandchildren.”
And while Hockley has dedicated beginner trails, there is also terrain that is more challenging. Which means all skill levels and ages can spent the day on the slopes together. And, once first-timers are more comfortable, there’s room to grow.
One of the best parts of skiing and snowboarding is what happens afterward the last run – and Hockley Valley Resort excels at “après ski.”
Not only is there on-site accommodation, an indoor pool and a full-service spa, there are tons of tantalizing food and drink options in cabin or at Babbo Wine Bar and Patio.
When your legs are tired and your enthusiasm is high, you can rest, relax, warm up, enjoy good food, and recharge for another day.
Spending time on the slopes will convert anyone into a winter lover, Neal says.
“Skiers and snowboarders are the only people who are happy when it snows,” he jokes. “We live in Canada. We have four months of winter. If you want to enjoy it, you have to get outside.”
