On a clear winter evening in Muskoka, the frozen shoreline of Lake Joseph glows in the moonlight.
Inside Sherwood Inn, the crackle of a wood fire competes with bursts of laughter drifting from the Veranda dining room.
It’s Yuk Yuk’s comedy night, one of the inn’s most anticipated winter traditions, and the intimate lodge is alive with the sound of clinking glasses, shared meals, and the kind of belly laughter that carries you through the season.
For many, Sherwood Inn is synonymous with summer: its iconic boathouse, sweeping lake views and long days that stretch into warm, golden evenings.
But ask anyone who has spent time there in the colder months, and they’ll tell you winter has its own charm.
The snow softens the forest trails, the lake freezes into sparkling ice, and the inn’s historic charm seems to glow even brighter against the frost.
This winter, Sherwood is turning that atmosphere inward with a slate of events that range from side-splitting comedy to immersive theatre, gourmet weekends, and family celebrations.
“There’s truly always something happening here at Sherwood Inn,” said Jack Hopkins, marketing manager for ClubLink Muskoka. “Winter in Muskoka is beautiful on its own, but we love giving people another reason to make the trip.”
From the laughter-filled Yuk Yuk’s Comedy Night in December to the ever-popular Murder Mystery weekends where guests become part of the story, Sherwood’s calendar is packed with experiences that turn an ordinary stay into something memorable.
Food lovers can savour the inn’s signature Culinary Weekend in November, a celebration of Canadiana-inspired flavours paired with chef-led demos and wine tastings, while families can dive into the festive spirit with holiday programming that runs from late December into early January — think gingerbread-making, Christmas trivia, and plenty of cozy cheer.
The New Year’s Eve celebration brings live music and Muskoka-style festivities to ring in 2026, and February’s Family Day weekend invites guests of all ages to join in on classic winter fun, from skating and snowman-building to fishing derbies.
Even weeknights carry their own charm, with Thursday trivia nights filling the pub with laughter and friendly competition.
The rhythm of winter
Beyond the programming, Sherwood Inn’s appeal lies in its setting. Guests move easily between the outdoor landscape, skating on the outdoor rink, cross country skiing, snowshoeing or fat-tire biking under frosted pines, and the cozy indoor comforts of fireplaces, lakeside views, and rooms designed for lingering.
The inn’s size and history give it the feel of a private retreat, but its event calendar ensures it hums with energy all winter long.
Jack says that’s exactly the balance Sherwood aims for. “People know us for summer, but winter gives them a whole new experience. We want every visit to feel like more than a getaway. It should be a story they take home with them.”
And whether that story is one of laughter, intrigue, or culinary indulgence, Sherwood Inn is proving that Muskoka’s best winter tales often unfold not out on the trails, but within the warm, storied walls of an inn that knows how to celebrate the season.
This is just the beginning — Sherwood Inn’s winter calendar is ever-evolving, with more exciting events and unique experiences being added throughout the season.
